Fire Emblem Echoes Shadow of Valentia is a pretty decent game and is worth playing but to be completely honest it’s not as good as last years Faiths or 2013’s Awakenings. It’s not a bad game at all but Shadow of Valentia still could have been slightly better. Fire Emblem Echoes Shadow of Valentia is a remake of Fire Emblem Gaiden and it features 2 main characters Alm and Celica who are fighting in a war. This retelling of Gaiden also introduces some new characters as well. The visuals, of course, a very nice and look very good on the 3DS screen. The music is also excellent just like other Fire Emblem games.
The combat system in this game is quite decent but it isn’t as good as past Fire Emblem games in my opinion. This game is also quite difficult and is a lot harder than some of the other Fire Emblem games. Many different difficulty modes are offered in this game such as Normal, Hard, Casual and Classic. This game can be very frustrating and is by far one of the most frustrating Fire Emblem games to date. There is a significant amount of grinding to be done in this game. The map design is questionable. In my opinion, it was very poorly made. Overall Fire Emblem Shadow of Valentia can be very boring gameplay wise. Battles tend to drag out.
While Fire Emblem Shadow of Valentia excels in music it does not excel in voice acting. Not even in the slightest. Then again this was never Fire Emblems strong point. Fire Emblem games tend to have mediocre voice acting.
The cutscenes in this game are gorgeous and look absolutely fantastic on the 3ds screen. Dungeons in this game aren’t great and they can be very repetitive. They weren’t well crafted in my opinion.
The story in this game is definitely interesting and it grabbed my attention. The characters in this game are pretty good. Overall this game does have an interesting story with good enough characters. If you are looking for a game with an interesting story with good characters then you should look into this game.
Overall I wasn’t a big fan of this game. It’s a decent game but its nowhere near as good as Fates and definitely is not as good as Awakening. There are much better JRPG’s on the 3ds in my opinion like Pokemon Sun/Moon or Tales of the Abyss.
If you’re a newcomer to the Fire Emblem series then I do not recommend you get this game. I recommend you pick up Awakenings if you are new to the series.
A decent Fire Emblem game with a good story but overall not as good as the other 3DS Fire Emblem games.
